My rocket gleamed in the morning sun. Its stack of over sized engines preparing for the controlled explosion that would propel my little space men into the unknown. Scary. This is the feeling we all get when getting ready to launch in KSP, but luckily, these little green men are happily unaware. I fired up the engines, admiring the smoke effects as it billowed under the launch pad and out of vents under the craft. The rocket juddered, and proceeded to fly slowly up into the atmosphere. I thought "This is actually going well." Famous last words! A few seconds later, the main shaft of the rocket buckled, the structural integrity of the craft running off into the hills, and the top part of the rocket dropped. However the engines were still ignited, and the 2 parts proceeded to dissolve the middle of the craft in a pincer like maneuver. The cockpit blew off, flinging the kerbals inside into a quick descent. They are now scattered across the whole of kerbal.
Such is the life of a Kerbal Space Program player, but we do love it so. With the release of the full game on monday, update 1.0, players will be jumping onto their steam accounts to download it. And i can say it is beautiful. Squad have added a bunch of new features, such as the new atmospheric affects. Having not played ksp for a while, i was pleasantly surprised to see they had added parts that were only mods previously, such as shrouds that protect your payload while powering out of the atmosphere.
My first flight in 1.0 was brilliant. Skipping career mode I started a new sandbox mode, and constructed a ship. Already knowing how to play i decided to create a rocket that would take up a space plane, covered with the new shrouds. I finished it, the perfect rocket was on the launchpad, its huge kerbodyne mega engines (bigger than the rockomax) primed. I fired them up, and it launched sluggishly into the sky, the plane on top weighing it down. It took a few minutes to get into space, but everything was perfect. I separated the first stage, the smaller kerbodyne being revealed and started to build enough speed to make a stable orbit. A minute later a perfect circle had enveloped the Earth on the map, and that amazing music played. This game really gives the player a sense of amazement. I released the ship, the shrouding falling away, framing the space plane in the center. Now, i only got this plane up here so i could test the new atmospheric effects, so i quickly spun it around a started a burn to decrease my speed. I was soon headed back to Earth.
The plane dived into the stratosphere falling faster and faster. Flames started to lick at the cockpit. A thought came to me "Maybe i should have put some heat protection on... Nah". Again, famous last words. All at once the wings flew of and the fuselage decided to piss off too! And I watched in pure agony, as the perfectly pointed cockpit, flew like a missile into the Kerbals coffee room... Ah, such is the life of a KSP player.
